I loved this book. I have watched my sister in law, the author, Eva McCall evolve into such a writer of words, thoughts, and feelings. In her previous novels, she has shared her family with the reader. "Button Box" takes us back in history to a place that is sometimes hard to visit. It is written so well. Once I picked the book up, I did not want to put it down until the last page. I congratulate Eva on a wonderful story. She told this difficult story with such powerful emotions. Read "Button Box" today-you will be so glad you did.Am I overly kind in my review since I know the author; no my friends, I am probably more critical than most would be. She asked for my honest opinion when I read this book--and I gave it---"Love it, I salute you Eva McCall"-can't wait for the sequel, I know there has to be one.

Button Box Eva McCall 9780988943155 Books Reviews
Like all good writers, Eva McCall has an eye for detail as she makes the characters and places in this antebellum novel come alive. "Button Box" is a multi-layered story It is a love story spanning the years before, during, and after the Civil War as the action alternates between New Orleans and a plantation in South Carolina. It is also a searing look at plantation life, revealing the sexual abuse of both male and female slaves and the physical brutality of the overseer and the master. McCall develops even the minor characters with insight and nuance, such as a rapist who blames his victim for inflaming him with desire, and a "mountain man" who is appalled by the treatment of the slaves but shows no respect for his own wife. The astute portrayal of all the characters, both major and minor, and the well-paced plot of "Button Box" combine to reveal Eva McCall's skill as a first-rate novelist.
Plantation life was no picnic, especially if you were a slave. You will feel that in your bones as you read this book. Getting away and living on the streets of New Orlean's isn't much better, but at least you are your own person. Abigail Sloan has some heart rendering abuse with the result being one of the most important in her live. Her decision has many far reaching consequences. This is a book that unwraps the sorrow of being a slave in the 1800s. Yet, even in that, some joy can be scraped together. Get the book--you won't be able to put it down!
I debated long and hard as to whether or not I should give McCall's last novel four or five stars...for five stars...I was hooked with the plot and the character. Wavering toward the four star was the salve dialect...the novel only needed a few lines here and there in dialect for this reader to understand the difference in speakers....what pushed the story back to five stars was the dead-on dialect...it's touch to write half the characters in dialect and the other half without...
An emaciated runaway, Abigail Sloan is living on the streets of New Orleans in 1858. Life in a New Orleans brothel isn't easy for girl. Although she isn't considered one of the "girls," that doesn't stop a drunk to having his way with her. Abigail is rescued after stealing a roll from a bakery. Luckily, her captor isn't the police, but David Cranshaw, who has a heart has big as his pocketbook. He takes her home to his servants and his wife, Mariah to stabilize her.
This reader was never crystal clear on why David saved Abigail. Could be he needed a project other than Mariah. Mariah was in despair over the death of their baby girl, Rosemary, and sinking lower every day.
Then, Abigail turned up with child as a result of the rape she encountered at the brothel. Abigail wasn't sure what to do, but David saw his chance. If Abigail would give her baby, the one she claimed she did not want, to David and Mariah, well, slipping a new baby in Mariah's arms would fix everything.
The results leave to a wonderful read, even if the slave dialect is intrusive. Still, I had trouble putting this book down, anxious to see what life and Eva McCall had in store for these characters.
Enjoyed the book very much! The characters were true to that time period.
Love the book . I know the lady that wrote it so that makes me like it even more.
Simplistic with an obvious ending.
I loved every page of the Button Box, you can't put the book down. A friend from Franklin, NC turned me on to Eva McCall a few weeks ago. I first read "Murder on Haint Branch" and was hooked on Ms McCall's style of writing. Now I have just received "Edge of Heaven" and "Children on the Mountain" also written by Eva McCall. I can't wait to start reading. I hope Ms. McCall keeps writing more books for all of her fans. Thanks Eva McCall.
